Urian Oakes, the son of Edward Oakes, who was freeman 1642, member of the church, selectman 1643-1646, 1648, 1649, 1655,
1657-1664, 1666-1668, 1670-1678, representative, and who died at Concord, Oct. 13, 1689, and of Jane his wife, was born
in England; graduated at Harvard College, 1649; went to England, and was the minister of Tichfield, in Hampshire; was
silenced as a Noncomformist, 1662; returned to America, at the earnest request of the church of Cambridge, and was

town-drummer, as appears by the following record, bearing date 5 (9.) 1646. "It is ordered by the Townsmen that there

William Manning, Cambridge, freeman 1643, member of the church, selectman 1667-1670, 1672, 1676-1681, 1683; he was
probably the person sent, about 1670, as a messenger to England, to invite Urian Oakes to come over, and settle in
Cambridge; his wife's name was Dorothy. Here lyeth interred the body of JOHN COOPER who departed this life 22 Day of Augustin ye year of our Lord God 1691 in the 74 years of his age. Deacon John Cooper was the son of Lydia, the wife of Deacon Gregory Stone, by a former husband, who died in England; he, with his sister Lydia Cooper (afterwards Fiske), came to America with Deacon Stone (who was freeman in 1636), was freeman 1642, married Anna, daughter of Deacon Nathaniel Sparhawk, was deacon of the church, selectman 1646, 1648, 1652, 1654, 1656, 1657, 1659-1681, 1684 - 1690; Town Clerk 1669 - 1691. |
